MV Explorer, Semester at Sea (2005, slow download) - The MV EXPLORER is a Volunteer Observing Ship that obtains ocean measurements on behalf of NOAA. These measurements are critical to the work of the Office of Climate Observations at OGP and feed directly into the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GOES-S). The ship's main function, though, is to conduct the Semester at Sea program in association with the University of Pittsburg. This fall almost 700 students from over 250 U.S. academic institutions will sail from Nassau in the Bahamas, to Salvador, Brazil, to Capetown, South Africa, to Kobe, Japan and back to the United States. On the leg from Salvador, Brazil to Capetown, South Africa, Dr. Rick Lumpkin from the NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) and Dr. John Kermond (OGP) will deploy drifters and argo floats. Both students and faculty are involved with this activity.
